Getting Around Vienna: Transport Apps & Your First 48 Hours
Vienna has one of the most reliable transit systems in the world — the U-Bahn runs frequently, the trams are a joy, and everything is easy to pay for. The one money-saver most tourists miss is the cheaper airport train. Here's what actually works.
The best default: the U-Bahn
Vienna's U-Bahn (metro) is fast, frequent, and reaches everywhere a visitor needs, backed up by an excellent tram and bus network. Your ticket covers all of them, so just hop on whatever comes first.
Buy in the app to save a little
A single ticket is about €3.20, or €3.00 in the WienMobil app. Riding more than three times in a day? The 24-hour ticket (about €10.20) is better value — and there are 48-hour, 72-hour and 7-day versions too.
The airport train tourists overpay for
Two trains link the airport and the centre, and the well-advertised one is the expensive one.
Take the S7, not the CAT
The City Airport Train (CAT) is €14.90 to Wien Mitte. The ÖBB S7 suburban train does almost the same trip for around €5.40 — only slightly slower, and what most locals take. Save the CAT for when speed matters more than money.
Don't forget to validate
Validate paper tickets
If you buy a paper time-based ticket, stamp it in the blue validator before your first ride. App tickets are already active. Vienna uses an honour system with spot checks — no valid ticket means a fine.

Frequently asked questions
- Which transport app is best in Vienna?
- The official WienMobil app is the one to install — it plans U-Bahn, tram and bus routes and sells digital tickets a little cheaper than the machines. Google Maps and Citymapper also cover Vienna well for navigation.
- How much is a Vienna transport ticket?
- A single ticket is about €3.20 (€3.00 if you buy it digitally in the WienMobil app), valid for one direction with transfers. If you'll ride more than three times in a day, the 24-hour ticket (about €10.20) is better value.
- How do I get from Vienna Airport (VIE) to the city?
- Two trains run the route. The City Airport Train (CAT) reaches Wien Mitte in about 16 minutes for €14.90. The ÖBB S7 (or REX) suburban train takes a bit longer for around €5.40 — much cheaper for almost the same result, and the option most locals use.
- Is the CAT or S7 better from Vienna Airport?
- For value, the S7 wins easily: about €5.40 versus €14.90 for the CAT, for a ride only slightly slower into the centre. Take the CAT only if you specifically want the fastest, no-stops connection to Wien Mitte.
- Do I need to validate tickets in Vienna?
- If you buy a paper time-based ticket, validate it in the blue machine before your first ride. Digital tickets in the WienMobil app are already active. Vienna runs on an honour system with spot checks, and riding without a valid ticket means a fine.
- Should I buy a Vienna 24-hour or multi-day ticket?
- Yes if you're sightseeing actively. A 24-hour ticket (~€10.20) pays off after about three rides, and there are 48-hour, 72-hour and 7-day options. For occasional trips, single tickets via the app are fine.
- Which ride-hailing app works in Vienna?
- Bolt, Uber and FreeNow all operate, with FreeNow also booking licensed taxis. They're useful late at night, but Vienna's U-Bahn and trams are so frequent and reliable that you rarely need a car.
