Getting Around Singapore: Transport Apps & Your First 48 Hours

Singapore2 min readUpdated June 28, 2026

Singapore has one of the best transport systems in the world: the MRT is fast, spotless, reaches almost everywhere, and you pay just by tapping a bank card. For everything else, there's Grab. Setup here takes about two minutes. Here's what actually works.

The best default: the MRT

The MRT is the backbone of getting around Singapore — frequent, efficient, air-conditioned, and genuinely cheap (most trips are S$1.50–2.20). For nearly every visitor route it's faster and far cheaper than a taxi.

Just tap your bank card

You don't need a special card. Via SimplyGo, tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard or Amex — or your phone — directly at the gate. No EZ-Link, no registration, no top-up. (Foreign cards carry a small daily admin fee of about S$0.60.)

Getting in from Changi

The MRT East-West Line runs from Changi into the city in about 30 minutes for around S$2 — tap in with the same contactless card you'll use all trip.

When a ride makes sense

If you've got heavy bags or it's late, a Grab or metered taxi from the arrivals hall is faster door-to-door and typically costs S$20–35. Otherwise the MRT is the easy, cheap default.

Apps you can reuse

You don't need anything exotic for navigation.

  • Google Maps — reliable MRT and bus routing with live times
  • Citymapper — excellent, clear step-by-step routing for Singapore

The app for everything else

Grab is the local default

Grab is the must-have ride app — cars and taxis with upfront pricing. Gojek, TADA and CDG Zig are alternatives worth comparing. Street taxis are metered and honest, so flagging one works fine too.

Your first 48 hours

  1. From Changi, take the MRT East-West Line into the city (~30 min, ~S$2), tapping in with your contactless card.
  2. Use SimplyGo — just tap a bank card or phone — for every MRT and bus ride; skip the Tourist Pass unless you'll ride a lot.
  3. Install Grab for door-to-door trips and late nights.
  4. Keep Google Maps or Citymapper for navigation.

Do those four things and Singapore's transport becomes the smoothest part of your trip.

Frequently asked questions

Which transport app is best in Singapore?
Google Maps and Citymapper both cover the MRT and buses excellently, and Grab is the must-have app for rides and taxis. Between them you rarely need anything else — paying for the MRT itself doesn't even require an app.
How do I pay for the Singapore MRT?
Just tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard or Amex (or your phone) directly at the gate via SimplyGo — no EZ-Link card or registration needed. Note foreign cards usually carry a small daily admin fee of around S$0.60.
How much does the MRT cost in Singapore?
Fares are distance-based and cheap — roughly S$1.50–2.20 for typical trips into the central area. A single fare from Changi Airport to the city centre is only about S$2.
How do I get from Changi Airport to the city?
Take the MRT East-West Line — about 30 minutes to the City Hall area for around S$2, tapping in with a contactless card. A Grab or taxi from the arrivals hall is faster door-to-door and typically runs S$20–35.
Should I buy a Singapore Tourist Pass?
Only if you'll ride a lot. The Tourist Pass gives unlimited MRT, LRT and bus travel from about S$17 for a day. If you'll take fewer than five rides a day, simply tapping a contactless bank card via SimplyGo works out cheaper.
Do I still need an EZ-Link card in Singapore?
Not if you have a contactless bank card or phone — SimplyGo handles everything. EZ-Link stored-value cards still exist for those without a contactless card, but most visitors can skip them entirely.
Is Grab the best ride app in Singapore?
Grab has the widest coverage and is the default. Gojek, TADA and ComfortDelGro's CDG Zig app are alternatives worth comparing on price. Street taxis are metered and honest, so flagging one also works fine.
