Getting Around Porto: Transport Apps & Your First 48 Hours

Portugal2 min readUpdated June 28, 2026

Porto is small, hilly, and gloriously walkable — but it also has a clean, modern metro that runs straight from the airport into town. Sort one reusable card and you're set. Here's what actually works.

The best default: walk, then take the metro

The historic centre, Ribeira, and the riverside are best on foot (bring decent shoes for the hills). For longer hops — the airport, or crossing the Douro to Vila Nova de Gaia — the metro is fast and cheap.

One reusable Andante card

Load tickets onto a reusable Andante Azul card (about €0.60 for the card itself), priced by zone. If you'll ride a lot, an Andante Tour pass gives unlimited travel for 24 hours (€7.75) or 72 hours (€16.55).

Getting in from the airport

Metro Line E (the violet line) runs from the airport to Trindade in about 25–30 minutes.

Budget about €2.85 on arrival

A first airport trip costs roughly €2.85 — about €0.60 for the Andante Azul card plus a €2.25 Zone 4 (Z4) ticket. Buy it at the machine before you tap in, and you're rolling.

Apps you can reuse

  • Google Maps / Citymapper — reliable metro and bus routing
  • Anda — official app for mobile Andante tickets
  • Uber / Bolt — both operate widely when you want a door-to-door ride

Your first 48 hours

  1. From OPO, take metro Line E to Trindade with an Andante Azul card and a Z4 ticket.
  2. If you'll ride a lot, switch to an Andante Tour pass for unlimited travel.
  3. Keep Google Maps or Citymapper for routing — and walk the centre.
  4. Save Uber or Bolt for the hills at the end of a long day.

Do those four things and Porto's transport is sorted from the moment you land.

Frequently asked questions

Which transport app is best in Porto?
Google Maps and Citymapper both cover the metro and buses well for routing. The official Anda app handles mobile Andante tickets. For rides, Uber and Bolt both operate widely in Porto.
Do I need an Andante card in Porto?
Yes — load your tickets onto a reusable Andante Azul card (about €0.60 for the card). It works across the metro, buses and some local trains by zones. If you'll ride a lot, the Andante Tour pass gives unlimited travel for 24 or 72 hours.
How do I get from Porto Airport (OPO) to the city?
Take metro Line E (the violet line) to Trindade in about 25–30 minutes. For a first arrival the total is roughly €2.85: about €0.60 for the Andante Azul card plus a €2.25 Zone 4 (Z4) ticket. It's by far the cheapest way in.
How much is the Porto metro?
Fares are zone-based and loaded onto an Andante card. A typical central trip is a Z2 ticket; the airport is in Z4. If you're sightseeing actively, an Andante Tour pass (about €7.75 for 24 hours or €16.55 for 72 hours) gives unlimited rides.
Is the Andante Tour pass worth it?
If you'll take several rides a day or arrive and leave by metro, yes — Andante Tour 1 (24h, ~€7.75) and Tour 3 (72h, ~€16.55) give unlimited metro and bus travel. For a couple of trips, single zone tickets on an Andante Azul card are cheaper.
Which ride-hailing app works in Porto?
Uber and Bolt both operate widely in Porto and usually undercut traditional taxis. They're handy at night or with luggage, but the compact centre means you'll often just walk.
Can I walk around Porto?
Mostly, yes — the historic centre, Ribeira and the riverside are compact and walkable, though hilly. Use the metro for longer hops (like the airport or crossing the river to Gaia) and your feet for everything in between.
