Getting Around Miami: Transport Apps & Your First 48 Hours

United States2 min readUpdated July 6, 2026

Miami is a sprawl stitched together by causeways — and yes, it's car country. But the core is better connected than its reputation: a free downtown people-mover, a Metrorail line straight to the airport, and free trolleys in the neighbourhoods you actually visit. Here's what actually works.

The best default: ride-hailing, with free rails in the core

For beach-to-neighborhood hops, Uber and Lyft are the default — install both and compare, and expect surge on weekend nights. Within downtown and Brickell, skip the car entirely: the elevated Metromover is free and runs every few minutes.

Tap your card, skip the ticket machine

Metrorail and Metrobus take contactless credit/debit or phone wallets straight at the gate — $2.25 a ride. The Metromover and the neighbourhood trolleys (Miami Beach, downtown, Coral Gables) are completely free.

Getting in from the airport

From MIA, ride the free MIA Mover to Miami Central Station, then the Metrorail Orange Line into downtown — about 15 minutes for $2.25. Central Station also has Tri-Rail and the Brightline intercity trains to Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando.

Heading straight to South Beach?

There's no rail across the bay — budget a ride-hail ($25–40 to South Beach depending on traffic) or take the Metrobus 119/S across the causeway if you're traveling light.

Free trolleys worth knowing

  • South Beach trolley — loops the neighbourhood, free.
  • Downtown/Brickell trolleys — fill the gaps the Metromover doesn't reach.
  • Coral Gables & Wynwood — their own free loops; check the Transit app for live positions.

Apps you can reuse

  • Uber and Lyft — the default for anything beyond the core; compare both before booking
  • Transit — live Metrorail, Metromover, trolley, and bus times
  • Google Maps — reliable routing across the sprawl

Your first 48 hours

  1. At MIA, take the free MIA Mover + Metrorail downtown ($2.25 contactless) — or a ride-hail straight to the beach.
  2. Install Uber and Lyft both; prices for the same trip diverge at peak times.
  3. Ride the free Metromover around downtown and Brickell instead of short car hops.
  4. Use the free trolleys on the beach and in Coral Gables — the Transit app shows them live.

Do those four things and Miami's transport is sorted from the moment you land. Knowing when the free options beat a $30 surge ride is exactly what Arrived works out for you.

Frequently asked questions

Which transport app is best in Miami?
Uber and Lyft are the workhorses — install both and compare prices. For public transport, the Transit app gives real-time Metrorail, Metromover, and bus times, and Google Maps handles routing across the sprawl.
Can I get around Miami without a car?
In the core, yes: downtown and Brickell are covered by the free Metromover, the Metrorail links the airport, and free trolleys run in Miami Beach, downtown, and Coral Gables. For everything else — and late nights — you'll lean on Uber or Lyft.
How do I get from Miami Airport (MIA) to the city?
Take the free MIA Mover to Miami Central Station, then the Metrorail Orange Line downtown (about 15 minutes, $2.25 contactless). To South Beach, budget a ride-hail instead — typically $25–40 depending on traffic and surge.
Is the Metromover really free?
Yes — the elevated Metromover loops through downtown and Brickell completely free, every few minutes. It's genuinely useful for hopping between Bayside, the arena, and Brickell's restaurants.
How do I pay for the Metrorail and buses?
Tap a contactless credit or debit card (or phone wallet) directly at the gate — $2.25 a ride. No need to buy a separate EASY Card for a short visit.
How do I get to South Beach without a car?
From downtown, the Miami Beach free trolleys and Metrobus route 119/S run across the causeway, but most visitors just take an Uber or Lyft (15–25 minutes from downtown). Once you're on the beach, the free South Beach trolley loops the neighbourhood.
Do Uber and Lyft work at Miami Airport?
Yes — both pick up at marked ride-share zones by terminal. Compare the two apps; prices for the same route can differ a lot at peak times.
