Getting Around Kuala Lumpur: Transport Apps & Your First 48 Hours
Kuala Lumpur pairs a growing rail network with Grab, the ride app that quietly runs Southeast Asia. The trains are cheap and clean; Grab covers everywhere they don't reach (which, in the heat, is a relief). Here's what actually works.
The best default: trains plus Grab
KL's MRT, LRT and Monorail are inexpensive and useful, but the lines don't connect every corner, and walking in the tropical heat is rough. So pair the trains with Grab for short hops — it's cheap and shows the fare upfront.
One Touch 'n Go card for the trains
A Touch 'n Go card works across the MRT, LRT, Monorail, buses and the KLIA Ekspres gates — keep at least RM20 on it. Many gates now also take contactless credit/debit cards, but Touch 'n Go is the most universally accepted.
Getting in from the airport
The KLIA Ekspres is the fast way in: about 28 minutes non-stop from KLIA Terminal 1 to KL Sentral (RM40 one way), with a 3-minute hop between Terminals 1 and 2. From KL Sentral you connect to the rest of the rail network.
Consider the KL TravelPass
If you'll ride the trains a lot, the KL TravelPass bundles a KLIA Ekspres transfer with two days of unlimited Rapid KL rail and bus travel — all on a Touch 'n Go card.

Frequently asked questions
- Which transport app is best in Kuala Lumpur?
- Grab is the must-have — it's cheap, reliable, shows fares upfront, and covers the many gaps in KL's rail network. Google Maps and Moovit handle MRT, LRT and Monorail routing. Together they cover almost everything.
- Do I need a Touch 'n Go card in Kuala Lumpur?
- It's the easiest way to ride the trains — one Touch 'n Go card works across the MRT, LRT, Monorail and buses, and at the KLIA Ekspres gates (keep at least RM20 balance). Contactless credit and debit cards are also accepted at many gates.
- How do I get from KLIA to the city centre?
- Take the KLIA Ekspres train: about 28 minutes non-stop from KLIA Terminal 1 to KL Sentral (RM40 one way), with a quick 3-minute hop between Terminals 1 and 2. From KL Sentral you connect to the MRT, LRT and Monorail across the city.
- Is the KL TravelPass worth it?
- If you'll use the trains a lot, yes — the KL TravelPass bundles a KLIA Ekspres airport transfer with two days of unlimited Rapid KL rail and bus travel on a Touch 'n Go card. For lighter use, a standard Touch 'n Go with pay-as-you-go is fine.
- Can I pay with a contactless card on KL trains?
- Increasingly, yes — contactless credit and debit cards are accepted at many MRT, LRT and KLIA Ekspres gates, alongside Touch 'n Go. A Touch 'n Go card is still the most universally accepted option across all the rail lines and buses.
- Is KL's rail network enough, or do I need Grab?
- You'll want both. The MRT, LRT and Monorail are clean, cheap and useful, but the lines don't connect every neighbourhood and walking in the heat and humidity is tough. Grab fills the gaps cheaply and is the default for short hops.
- Is Grab better than taxis in KL?
- Generally yes — Grab shows the price before you book, so you avoid the meter disputes some street taxis are known for. It's the standard way locals and visitors get around for trips the trains don't cover.
